Through chemical recycling into pyrolysis oil, which will serve as circular feedstock for the petrochemical industry
The project is based on existing, proven and efficient technologies that will be applied on a large scale. The intial processed volume will be 300’000 ton per year, which will be scaled up to 600’000 ton per year in a second phase.
Efficient logistics by water will be key to achieve the growth in recycling capacity that is needed to realise the ambitious targets of the European Union on plastic recycling.
APPI is in the process of evaluating various locations in NW Europe that will facilitate high-volume, multimodal logistics.
With the projected capacity APPI will contribute significantly to the development of a more circular plastic economy.
Europe produces almost 60 million tonnes of plastic each year of which about half ends up in waste streams. From these waste streams only a fraction of plastics is currently recycled, and most plastic waste is incinerated or is put in landfill.
Over the last years, there has been a strong increase in public awareness of the plastic problem. In Europe, strong regulatory action has now set the stage for significant growth in sorting and recycling capacity, which will lead to a meaningful increase in plastic circularity.
APPI aims to be a leader in this trend by developing its integrated sorting and recycling concept in a consortium of experts from the various underlying disciplines.
